Biliverdin Reductase is a Novel Cell Proliferation and Differentiation Factor

This invention discovered two novel roles for biliverdin reductase (BVR) in a) modeling cell morphology and b) in controlling cell size. It is related to other inventions on BVR for treating cells following stroke or an ischemic event which includes contacting a cell with biliverdin reductase, or fragment or variant thereof, under conditions effective to inhibit cell damage following stroke or an ischemic event. This invention shows that BVR is autophosphorylated and phosphorylation is required for its activity.
The results define a previously unknown mechanism for regulation of BVR activity and are discussed in the context of relevance to heme metabolism.
